1. Keep calm and carry on.

Our political system is arranged to keep a check on the president’s power. In other words, for a president to make lasting changes on the immigration situation in our country, the president must work in cooperation with Congress. President Obama did not work with Congress, and the minor immigration changes he tried to make were stopped by the courts because he had overstepped his power.

If President-Elect Donald Trump wants to make lasting immigration changes, he must work with Congress.

2. Appeal to Congress to fix the broken system and work on immigration reform.

There are nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States of America. Our politicians must come up with a workable solution. Mass deportation is not a workable solution. It would be unaffordable, unrealistic, and cause the U.S. economy to plummet. Most importantly, it would cause families to be separated, and it would be an overly harsh punishment for non-criminals who came here to flee persecution in their own countries or simply to find a better life for themselves and their families.

Let Congress hear your voice. Speak to your Congressman and ask for immigration reform. Ask Congress for a legal immigration option that is more accessible and affordable than illegal immigration.

LOOK UP YOUR CONGRESSMAN HERE.

3. Know your rights and options.

Obama created some temporary immigration benefits such as DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) that provide short-term security for illegal immigrants but not permanent legalization. What happens if DACA is removed? We need to ask for permanent solutions to the broken immigration system, not just temporary fixes.

Many illegal immigrants have legalization options but they do not know it. Find out your options today.

We at the Immigration Law Office of Moises Barraza are committed to advocating for immigrants to be treated with dignity and justice and to help keep families together. We offer consultations to hear your story, determine your options, and create a personalized legalization strategy for you. And stay tuned as we continue to provide updates on the immigration situation.

Cómo Deben Responder los Inmigrantes a La Presidencia Trump
